What to Know About Stillwater Ponies Fall Sports Registration

What to Know About Stillwater Ponies Fall Sports Registration

Fall brings energy back to Stillwater Area High School as the Ponies prepare for another full slate of sports. If you or someone you know is interested in joining, here’s a rundown of what to expect.

Registration and Participation Details

Registration for fall sports opened on July 13 and includes offerings such as football, girls volleyball, boys and girls soccer, mountain biking, cross country, bowling, girls swimming & diving, and tennis. The first practice session is set for September 8—all programs follow six-day weekly schedules that often include non-school days and Saturdays.

To compete at the varsity level or take part in tryouts, athletes must register electronically by the fourth Monday of the season. Physicals — the Sports Qualifying Physical Exam (SQPE) — must be current and can’t expire mid-season.

What Fall Sports Offer

Some highlights for fall include:

  • Football: Traditional varsity and junior varsity rosters, heavy practice load.
  • Girls Volleyball: Includes varsity and sub-varsity teams; tryouts in late summer.
  • Cross Country (Girls & Boys): Practices both school days and early mornings/non-school days; meets run through November.
  • Mountain Biking: For students in grades 6-12, also requires registration with the Minnesota Cycling League; racing and state championship are part of the schedule.

For Coaches, Parents, and Fans

Coaches determine team placement, attendance standards, and contest participation. As always, there’s no opportunity to compete if you’re not registered by the deadline. Parents and guardians are often asked to attend orientation or parent-student meetings early in the season.

Fans of Stillwater hockey should note that home games are held at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center, and tickets are available electronically—using Hudl Fan or the SAHS “Go Ponies” portal. Streaming through MNHOCKEY.TV is an option for those unable to attend in person.

Looking Ahead

This fall season promises to be packed: athletes balancing school and sport, fans digging out their spirit gear, and coaches launching strategies. Whether you’re a returning veteran or a newcomer excited to try something new, the season is about commitment, teamwork, and community.
