Environmental Initiatives

Sustainable Stillwater MN

Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering a sustainable, healthy lifestyle to combat climate change. The organization supports initiatives that promote social, economic, and environmental resiliency in the community. Their efforts include the Green Business Directory, Safe Routes to School, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities plan.

Environmental Learning Center

Located behind Stillwater Area High School, the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area managed to reflect Minnesota’s major biomes, including oak forest, prairie, and coniferous planting. The ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like banding migratory birds and studying local wildlife. Public hiking is encouraged, though dogs are not allowed in the ELC.

GreenStep Cities Program

Since 2018, Stillwater has been designated a Minnesota GreenStep City, thanks to the efforts of the Sustainable Stillwater GreenStep team. This program provides guidelines to help cities achieve sustainability, resiliency, and a better quality of life for their citizens. The GreenStep Group collaborates with city officials to coordinate local programs and practices under the 2040 Comprehensive Plan, focusing on sustainable best practices that address green building, energy efficiency, natural resource conservation, transportation, and more.

Community Engagement

Residents are encouraged to participate in local environmental initiatives and adopt sustainable practices. Seasonal recommendations include:

  • Winter: Minimize the use of salt for deicing; use sand for deicing and recover it for reuse throughout the winter. Store sand in the yard for the next year. Always pick up after your dog.
  • Spring: Clear road gutters of debris before it gets flushed down the storm drain into the nearest water resource or treatment system.

By understanding Stillwater’s climate and engaging in these initiatives, residents can contribute to a more sustainable and resilient community.
