Stillwater, Minnesota, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various community-driven initiatives. These efforts focus on education, conservation, and energy action, aiming to create a resilient and eco-friendly future for all residents.
Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School
The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area behind Stillwater Area High School, featuring diverse biomes such as oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. The ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like banding migratory birds and monitoring local wildlife. Public hiking is encouraged, though dogs are not permitted to preserve the area’s ecological integrity.
Sustainable Stillwater MN: Community-Led Conservation
Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental resilience. Established in 2016, SSMN has launched initiatives like the downtown business waste management program S.E.E.D., energy management for carbon reduction, and the Safe Routes to School program. In 2018, Stillwater was designated a Minnesota GreenStep City, reflecting the community’s commitment to sustainable practices.
Energy Action Plan: A Path to Sustainability
In collaboration with Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy program, Stillwater developed an Energy Action Plan to help residents and businesses reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints. The plan focuses on education and engagement, aiming to save the community money, reduce emissions, and increase energy resiliency while preserving Stillwater’s historic character.
Water Quality and PFAS Monitoring
The City of Stillwater is proactive in monitoring and addressing water quality concerns, including the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The city’s water utility serves approximately 20,600 people, drawing from groundwater sources. Regular testing and adherence to health-based guidance values ensure the safety of the drinking water supply.
Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, fostering a sustainable and healthy community for current and future generations.
