Stillwater’s Water Quality: Addressing PFAS Concerns

Stillwater’s Water Quality: Addressing PFAS Concerns

In recent years, the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water has become a significant concern nationwide. PFAS, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment, have been linked to various health issues. Recognizing the importance of this issue, the City of Stillwater has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety of its water supply.

Understanding PFAS in Stillwater’s Water

Stillwater’s drinking water is sourced from the Prairie Du Chien-Jordan and Jordan aquifers through eight wells. Routine testing has detected PFAS levels in some wells. Notably, Wells #6 and #10 have shown PFAS concentrations above the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) drinking water standards, while Well #9 has levels just below these standards. In response, these wells have been temporarily taken offline to prevent any potential health risks.

Proactive Measures and Future Plans

To address the PFAS issue, Stillwater has initiated the construction of a new treatment facility at Well #10. This facility aims to effectively remove PFAS contaminants, allowing the well to be safely reactivated. Construction began in mid-September, with significant progress made, including the installation of new sanitary sewer manholes and water piping connections. The project is expected to be substantially complete by May 1, 2026.

Looking ahead, the city is planning a comprehensive, long-term solution to ensure the continued safety of its water supply. This includes constructing additional treatment facilities using granular activated carbon (GAC) technology, which has proven effective in removing PFAS. Early estimates suggest this initiative will cost nearly $30 million, with the goal of having the system operational by 2027 or sooner.

Commitment to Transparency and Safety

Stillwater remains committed to transparency and keeping residents informed about water quality issues. Regular updates are provided on the city’s official website, and residents are encouraged to sign up for email notifications to stay informed about ongoing efforts and developments.

Ensuring the safety and quality of drinking water is a top priority for Stillwater. Through proactive measures, strategic planning, and community engagement, the city is dedicated to addressing PFAS concerns and providing residents with safe, high-quality water.
