Hey there, Stillwater friends—Mia Erickson here with some ideas for making the most of this lovely town all year round. Whether you’ve got a free afternoon or a whole weekend, there’s always something to explore. Below are parks, trails, river adventures, and more spots right in our backyard.
Parks & Trails for Fresh Air
Pioneer Park
Want stellar views of the St. Croix River and downtown Stillwater? Head to Pioneer Park, perched above the river on a bluff. It’s perfect for a picnic, leisurely walk, or just soaking in sweeping vistas. Amenities include picnic shelters, open space, playgrounds, and restrooms. (Address: 515 North 2nd Street)
Teddy Bear Park
This playful little park is a hit with kids. You’ll spot giant teddy bears, a treehouse-style playground, slides, and plenty of open space. It’s free, public, and ideal for little explorers wanting to blow off steam. Open mid-April through mid-October. (207 East Nelson Street)
Lily Lake Park
If you’re craving more activity, Lily Lake Park delivers. Think basketball, tennis, a fishing pier, boat launch, boat docks, and open spaces. Indoor skating in winter too. Great for a full day outdoors. (1208 S. Greeley Street)
Pine Point Regional Park & Brown’s Creek Trail
For bikers and hikers: the trail network at Pine Point connects you to larger regional paths. Also nearby, Brown’s Creek State Trail offers scenic routes through forests and meadows. Both are excellent options whether you want something gentle or a more robust day out.
By the River & Historic Spots
Lowell Park & the Historic Lift Bridge
Lowell Park sits right on the riverfront in downtown. Walk along the St. Croix, watch boats pass under the lift bridge, have a picnic, or catch a community event here. The bridge itself is iconic—a must-see and much loved by locals and visitors alike.
Stillwater Trolley Tour
If you’re curious about the stories behind the buildings, the lumber past, and local legends, hop on the Stillwater Trolley. The narrated tour runs through historic districts and gives fresh perspective on what makes this town so unique.
Art & Small-Batch Spots
Union Art Alley & ArtReach St. Croix
Love murals, street art, or galleries? Union Art Alley, tucked just off Main Street, is a colorful open-air exhibition that shifts and grows with new works. ArtReach St. Croix, across from the library, features rotating shows of ceramics, painting, printmaking and more—all showcasing local artists.
Shops, Treats & Local Flavor
Downtown Stillwater is bursting with independently owned shops, ice cream, boutiques, cafés, and vintage finds. End your adventure with a malt or soft-serve, or try unique candies and treats from places that’ve been doing things just a little differently for years.
Tips for the Weekend & Planning Ahead
• If you’re reserving picnic shelters, bandshells, or gazebos, make that booking ahead—Stillwater Parks sites take reservations, especially for larger groups.
• Many parks are open from early morning until 10 pm; Teddy Bear Park has more limited hours (8 am-8 pm).
• Parking during busy times downtown can fill up fast—if you can walk, bike, or park slightly off Main Street it often saves time and stress.
Stillwater is the kind of place that surprises you—whether you’re a lifelong resident or visiting for the first time. There’s always something a little offbeat, beautiful, or delicious just around the corner. Happy exploring!
