Stillwater, Minnesota, is experiencing a period of significant transformation, marked by new developments and community-driven initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s vibrancy and livability.
Central Commons: A New Mixed-Use Development
At the southeast corner of Manning Avenue and Highway 36, the approved Central Commons project is set to redefine the area. Spanning 35 acres, this mixed-use development will feature a grocery store anchor, a market-rate apartment building, and two additional retail lots. While the anticipated timeline remains unspecified, the project signifies a substantial investment in Stillwater’s growth.
Chick-fil-A’s Upcoming Addition
In early 2026, construction is slated to begin on a new Chick-fil-A restaurant at 2001 Washington Avenue. The 5,218-square-foot establishment will include dual drive-thru lanes, with entrances from Washington Avenue and Tower Drive, and exits onto Tower Drive. The opening is anticipated for the fall of 2026, adding to the city’s diverse dining options.
Modernizing Parking Enforcement
To improve parking compliance and streamline operations, Stillwater has expanded its partnership with Passport, a parking and mobility management platform. This collaboration introduces a unified system that enhances visibility into parking activity and reduces manual workflows, particularly in high-demand downtown areas.
Community Engagement on Social District Proposal
The city is exploring the creation of a Social District, allowing licensed businesses to sell alcoholic beverages in designated areas. Centered around downtown and extending a few blocks west from the river, the proposed district would enable patrons to enjoy drinks on sidewalks, in parks, or within participating retail locations. Public feedback is being collected through surveys and an open house planned for mid-July, with a potential pilot program in the fall of 2025.
Addressing PFAS Concerns
In response to concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is conducting investigations in Stillwater. Beginning in May 2025, the MPCA will sample water and soil throughout the city, including private wells, to identify potential PFAS sources and ensure water safety for residents.
These developments and initiatives reflect Stillwater’s commitment to thoughtful growth and community well-being, ensuring the city remains a dynamic and desirable place to live and visit.
