Stillwater isn’t just about its scenic river views—it’s home to a lively arts & culture landscape that shapes the city’s identity year-round. Whether you’re wandering downtown murals, catching a live set beside the St. Croix, or planning for art festivals that draw crowds, there’s always something to spark creative joy.
Union Art Alley: A Walking Gallery
Just off Main Street, Union Art Alley has transformed what was once a back-alley into one of Stillwater’s most dynamic public art spaces. Local artists have turned fading brick walls into vivid storytelling canvases—pieces rotate, new walls open up, and the art reflects the river town’s feel for community. Recent additions include murals by artists like Taylor Berman and Adam Turner, and opportunities for artists to contribute continue through official open calls. It’s a place for reflection, discovery, and delight in every colorful surface. (Artists featured: Deneena Hughes, JoJo of Murals by EROS, Liina & Co., Nipinet Landsem, etc.)
Festivals & Events: Anchors of Culture
Each fall, the Rivertown Fall Art Festival transforms downtown Stillwater into a bustling fine arts showcase with over 200 artists presenting work across media—painting, glass, fiber, metal, photography and more. Live music, food vendors, and the backdrop of the St. Croix make it a weekend you won’t soon forget.
Throughout the warmer months, weekends bring live music to venues like P.D. Pappy’s Bar & Grill, where outdoor patios and weekend evenings hum with bands and local talent. It’s music rooted in community—with people watching boats pass by or enjoying dinner outdoors.
Art Everywhere: Galleries, Sculptures & Hidden Gems
Stillwater features public art everywhere—from large murals depicting the city’s past (like log jams or historic bridges) to playful paintings on utility boxes along the riverfront. The River City Sculpture Tour invites folks to walk Main Street and beyond, spotting outdoor sculptures complete with plaques and stories.
Local galleries like the Stillwater Public Library Gallery and ArtReach St. Croix offer rotating exhibits, often spotlighting regional and contemporary artists. Shared spaces like the Grand Garage and Smith + Trade Mercantile contribute to the local arts economy and give students, artisans, and longtime creators space to show and connect.
Getting Involved: Supporting & Experiencing the Arts
Want to be part of the action? Artists can apply to contribute to Union Art Alley and other mural-spaces through open calls. There are also volunteer roles during festivals and live events. For everyone else, taking time to seek out the artwork—murals, sculptures, gallery shows—makes them part of your Stillwater experience.
So next time you’re out walking Main Street, headed to a festival, or grabbing dinner and live music, remember it’s more than entertainment—it’s Stillwater’s creative culture, alive and growing under your feet.
