Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment to Sustainability

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaging in several environmental initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and protecting natural resources. These efforts reflect the community’s dedication to environmental stewardship and resilience.

Bird City Program

The Bird City Program focuses on protecting bird habitats and biodiversity through education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration. Guided by best practices from the Minnesota Audubon Society, the program engages residents in bird conservation and aims to reduce human-caused threats to birds. This initiative underscores the understanding that healthy bird populations are indicators of a healthy environment for all.

Land Stewardship Program

The Land Stewardship Program emphasizes protecting land and water resources through community-led stewardship and practical conservation solutions. With a focus on stormwater management and watershed health, the program addresses pollution and runoff before they reach local waterways, thereby protecting the St. Croix River and surrounding ecosystems. Residents are empowered to take an active role in environmental care through hands-on action and education.

GreenStep Cities Program

Since 2018, Stillwater has been designated a Minnesota GreenStep City, thanks to the efforts of the Sustainable Stillwater GreenStep team. This program provides guidelines to help cities achieve sustainability, resiliency, and a better quality of life for citizens. The GreenStep Group collaborates with city officials to coordinate local programs and practices under the 2040 Comprehensive Plan, focusing on sustainable best practices that address green building, energy efficiency, natural resource conservation, and transportation.

Climate Action Planning

The GreenStep team is working closely with the City of Stillwater on the initial steps for developing a Climate Action Plan. Community members are encouraged to communicate to the city council the need for such a plan, highlighting the community’s proactive approach to addressing climate change and its impacts.

These initiatives demonstrate Stillwater’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the active role residents play in preserving the natural beauty and health of their community.
