Stillwater, Minnesota, has been actively engaging in various environmental initiatives to ensure a sustainable and healthy community. These efforts encompass water quality improvements, habitat restoration, and energy conservation.
Addressing PFAS Contamination
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been a concern in Stillwater’s water supply. The city identified elevated PFAS levels in some wells and has taken proactive measures to address this issue. A temporary treatment facility at Well #10 is under construction, with completion expected by May 2026. This facility aims to reduce PFAS levels and ensure safe drinking water for residents. Additionally, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is investigating potential PFAS sources, including sampling private wells, to determine contamination origins and implement necessary remediation strategies.
Habitat Restoration and Environmental Education
Stillwater is committed to preserving and restoring natural habitats. The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at Stillwater Area High School manages a 55-acre area reflecting Minnesota’s major biomes, including oak forests and prairies. This space serves as an outdoor classroom, offering students hands-on experiences in environmental science and conservation.
Furthermore, the Bird City Program, led by Sustainable Stillwater MN, focuses on protecting bird populations and their habitats. This initiative involves community education, habitat stewardship, and collaboration with local organizations to promote biodiversity and environmental health.
Energy Action Plan
In 2024, Stillwater adopted an Energy Action Plan to educate and inspire residents and businesses toward energy conservation. The plan sets a community-wide goal to save 3.8 million kWh of electricity and 198,000 therms of natural gas by the end of 2025. Achieving this goal is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 58% and save the community approximately $450,000. Strategies include promoting energy-efficient practices and supporting renewable energy adoption.
These initiatives reflect Stillwater’s dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability, fostering a healthier and more resilient community for current and future generations.
