Stillwater’s Community Development Initiatives: A Look at Recent Projects

Stillwater has recently undertaken several initiatives aimed at enhancing community development and infrastructure.

New Leadership in Community Development

In February 2026, Jason Zimmerman was appointed as the new Community Development Director. Zimmerman, who grew up on the west side of the Twin Cities, is enthusiastic about contributing to Stillwater’s growth. He is currently working on the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide the city’s development efforts for the next two decades. Zimmerman has praised the collaborative spirit within City Hall, stating, “I work with a very enthusiastic and team-oriented group of people in City Hall. It’s been easy to step in and build on their positive thinking for the future of Stillwater.”

Infrastructure Enhancements

To address water quality concerns, the city is constructing a temporary treatment facility at Well #10. This facility aims to mitigate PFAS contamination detected in some wells. Engineering design was completed by the end of March, with construction planned to start in late summer or early fall. The system is anticipated to be operational in spring 2026, aligning with increased water usage during that period.

Community Engagement and Future Planning

The city continues to engage residents in planning and development processes. The Community Development Department oversees building inspections, code enforcement, economic development, and planning divisions. Residents are encouraged to participate in public meetings and provide input on ongoing projects to ensure that development aligns with community needs and preserves the city’s historic character.

These initiatives reflect Stillwater’s commitment to thoughtful growth and community well-being, balancing development with the preservation of its unique heritage.
