Stillwater, Minnesota, renowned for its historic charm and vibrant community, is actively pursuing initiatives to enhance its development while preserving its unique character. The city’s leadership is committed to thoughtful growth that aligns with residents’ values and the city’s rich heritage.
New Leadership in Community Development
In February 2026, Jason Zimmerman joined Stillwater as the new Community Development Director. With roots in the Twin Cities, Zimmerman brings a fresh perspective to the role. He is currently spearheading the Comprehensive Plan, a strategic framework set to guide the city’s development efforts for the next two decades. This plan aims to balance growth with the preservation of Stillwater’s historical and cultural assets.
Balancing Events and Community Well-being
Stillwater’s bustling event calendar, featuring popular gatherings like Lumberjack Days and the Harvest Fest, has been a significant draw for visitors. However, the influx of tourists has raised concerns among residents about congestion and the impact on daily life. In response, city officials are evaluating strategies to manage the number and scale of events, ensuring that community well-being remains a priority while supporting local businesses.
Infrastructure and Public Services
The city is also focusing on infrastructure improvements and public services. Recent initiatives include the commencement of hydrant flushing to maintain water quality and reminders about paid parking regulations in downtown areas. These efforts reflect Stillwater’s commitment to providing efficient services and maintaining the city’s infrastructure to meet the needs of its residents and visitors.
Looking Ahead
As Stillwater continues to evolve, the city’s leadership remains dedicated to fostering a community that honors its past while embracing the future. Through strategic planning, responsive governance, and community engagement, Stillwater aims to ensure that its growth enhances the quality of life for all who call it home.
