Stillwater’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Stillwater’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaged in promoting environmental sustainability through various initiatives that encourage community involvement and education.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area behind Stillwater Area High School, featuring diverse ecosystems such as oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. It serves as an outdoor classroom where students participate in activities like bird banding, small mammal tracking, and wildlife photography. The ELC is open to the public for hiking, though dogs are not permitted to preserve the area’s natural state.

Sustainable Stillwater MN

Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering a resilient and sustainable community. SSMN has been instrumental in initiatives like the Green Business Directory, which recognizes local businesses committed to environmental responsibility, and the Bird City Program, aimed at protecting bird habitats and promoting biodiversity.

Energy Action Plan

In collaboration with the city, SSMN has contributed to the development of Stillwater’s Energy Action Plan. This plan focuses on educating residents and businesses about energy conservation, with goals to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, thereby enhancing the community’s energy resilience.

Community Involvement

Residents are encouraged to participate in these initiatives by volunteering for programs like the Adopt-A-Raingarden, which involves maintaining rain gardens to manage stormwater effectively. Additionally, the city offers educational programs, such as the Naturalist-in-Residence series at the Stillwater Public Library, providing insights into local ecology and conservation efforts.

Through these collaborative efforts, Stillwater continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
