The City of Stillwater is exploring the establishment of a social district in its downtown area, aiming to enhance community engagement and support local businesses. Authorized by the Minnesota Legislature in 2024, this initiative would allow individuals to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages while walking within a designated area.
To gather community input, the city has launched a survey and scheduled a public open house. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts through the survey available on the city’s official website. Additionally, an open house is planned for Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Margaret Rivers Room in the Stillwater Library.
The concept of a social district involves creating a specific area where patrons can enjoy alcoholic beverages purchased from local establishments while strolling through the district. This approach aims to boost local businesses and create a vibrant downtown atmosphere.
Community feedback is crucial in determining the feasibility and structure of the proposed social district. Residents’ insights will help shape the initiative to align with the community’s interests and ensure a positive impact on downtown Stillwater.
