Stillwater Considers Establishing Downtown Social District

Stillwater Considers Establishing Downtown Social District

Stillwater city officials are exploring the establishment of a social district in the downtown area, a move that would permit public consumption of alcoholic beverages within designated boundaries. This initiative follows authorization granted by the Minnesota Legislature in 2024, enabling the city to create and operate such a district.

During June and July, the city is actively seeking input from residents and business owners to gauge public opinion and gather feedback on the proposed social district. Community members are encouraged to participate by completing a brief survey available on the city’s official website. Additionally, a public open house is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Margaret Rivers Room at the Stillwater Library, providing an opportunity for in-person discussions and questions.

The concept of a social district involves designating specific areas where individuals can purchase and consume alcoholic beverages openly, aiming to enhance the vibrancy of downtown Stillwater and support local businesses. However, city officials emphasize the importance of community engagement to address potential concerns and ensure the district aligns with the interests and values of residents.
