Minnesota Wild: Much Progress, Still More to Build

The Minnesota Wild took a meaningful step this past NHL season — for the first time in over a decade they won a playoff series, defeating the Dallas Stars before falling to the Colorado Avalanche in five games in the second round. Despite the disappointment of being eliminated, improvements were evident. The Wild ended the regular season with a strong 46-24-12 record and 104 points, showcasing a marked leap in both offense and defensive depth. Quinn Hughes emerged as a significant trade acquisition, and while they weren’t perfect, the team demonstrated the kind of competitiveness fans have longed to see. But package the promise alongside identified weak spots — especially on the penalty kill, injuries to key players, and insufficient center depth — and it becomes clear there’s still work to do.

Gophers in the Spotlight: Football and Women’s Basketball Leading the Charge

The University of Minnesota continues to spin up momentum, especially in football and women’s basketball. Football under Coach P.J. Fleck appears poised for another solid season. With quarterback Drake Lindsey returning after a school-record freshman year passing, and running back Darius Taylor offering balance on the ground, there’s reason for optimism — especially in a Big Ten schedule that avoids several of the nation’s top-ranked heavy hitters. Women’s basketball is also solidifying its standing, having reached the Sweet Sixteen recently. With guard Tori McKinney returning from injury and anchoring the backcourt, the team hopes to build from last season’s breakthrough.

Stillwater High School: Community Roots, Rising Aspirations

While the pro and college levels draw statewide attention, in Stillwater we have our own stories that resonate deeply. Our high school teams practice, compete, and grow right here — from football and basketball, to wrestling, track and more. The dedication of coaches and student-athletes alike helps strengthen local pride. Challenges include maintaining resources across programs and balancing academic demands during travel and tournaments. But the payoff is real: teamwork, growth, and community connectedness.

Where Things Go From Here

Wild: Aiming for deeper playoff success

From this point forward, expect off-season decisions to focus on bolstering weaknesses. Fixing power play and penalty kill inconsistencies, reinforcing center depth, and keeping key players healthy will be central. Retaining top acquisition talent like Quinn Hughes could also determine how high this Wild team climbs.

Gophers: Balancing expectations and roster turnover

With several players graduating and entering the transfer portal, Minnesota’s college programs will need to lean on incoming talent and returning stars. If Lindsey stays sharp, McKinney stays healthy, and the supporting cast steps up, the Gophers could surprise in the Big Ten.

Stillwater athletics: Investing for sustainability

To keep the momentum local, our community will need steady investment in facilities, equitable support for different sports, and continued focus on student-well-being. When schools, families, and local organizations come together, our high school athletes don’t just win games — they build futures.

The tapestry of Minnesota sports remains rich—Wild fights, Gophers’ hopes, and Stillwater’s heart all woven together. What comes next may define how far we rise.
