Protecting Stillwater’s Water: Community Efforts and Environmental Initiatives

Water is a vital resource for Stillwater, Minnesota, and the community has been actively engaged in initiatives to protect and enhance its quality. From addressing contaminants to promoting sustainable practices, these efforts reflect a collective commitment to environmental stewardship.

Addressing PFAS Contamination

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals found in various consumer products. In 2022 and 2023, the City of Stillwater identified unsafe PFAS levels in its drinking water and ceased using the affected wells. To further investigate and mitigate this issue, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) initiated sampling of private wells in May 2025. This ongoing investigation aims to identify PFAS sources and ensure the safety of the community’s water supply. Residents with private wells are encouraged to participate in the sampling process to help determine potential risks and necessary remediation efforts.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

Education plays a crucial role in environmental conservation. The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at Stillwater Area High School offers students hands-on experiences in a 55-acre area encompassing oak forests, prairies, and ponds. This diverse landscape serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding, wildlife monitoring, and ecological studies. The ELC not only enriches student learning but also fosters a deeper appreciation for local ecosystems.

Sustainable Stillwater MN Initiatives

Sustainable Stillwater MN, a nonprofit organization, has been instrumental in promoting sustainability within the community. Since its inception in 2013, the organization has launched several initiatives, including:

  • GreenStep Cities Program: Stillwater has been designated a Minnesota GreenStep City since 2018, thanks to efforts that focus on green building, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation.
  • Bird City Program: This initiative supports the protection and management of green spaces, making urban areas more hospitable for birds and people alike.
  • Green Business Directory: A tool that highlights local businesses committed to social and environmental responsibility, encouraging eco-conscious consumer choices.

These programs demonstrate a community-wide dedication to sustainable practices and environmental health.

Energy Action Plan

In collaboration with Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy program, Stillwater developed an Energy Action Plan to guide residents and businesses in reducing energy consumption and carbon footprints. The plan emphasizes education and engagement, aiming to save the community money, reduce emissions, and increase energy resiliency while preserving Stillwater’s historic character for future generations.

Through these collective efforts, Stillwater continues to prioritize the protection of its water resources and the promotion of environmental sustainability, ensuring a healthier future for all residents.
