Stillwater Area High School Spring Sports Deliver State-Level Success
The Ponies wrapped up the spring season in fine fashion. Senior Ana Weaver claimed the state crown in the 3200-meter run, breaking past personal and school records as she crossed the finish line in 10:15.27 — more than six seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Meanwhile, the boys lacrosse team made history, placing 4th in their first ever state-tournament appearance with an impressive 15-4 record overall. Go Ponies!
Baseball and softball both rode deep postseason runs. The softball team entered the Class AAAA State Quarterfinals as the #1 seed, with just two losses all season, before falling 8-5 to Forest Lake. Over in baseball, the Ponies also secured over 20 wins (20-5) but were edged 6-5 in eight innings by Minnetonka in their quarterfinal game. These seasons showcased both promise and grit, and set the stage high for next year’s campaigns.
Tommies’ Football Makes Statement at Homecoming
The University of St. Thomas jumped out of conference play with a commanding 50-17 Homecoming victory over San Diego. It was not just the scoreline that turned heads — quarterback Nick Peipert became the first in the Tommies’ Division I era to record a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown, and a reception all in the same half. Running back Gabriel Abel piled up 148 rushing yards and a touchdown, while receiver Stefano Giovannelli posted a career-high 110 yards on just two receptions, including a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Defensive highlight: Kyle Winchester snagged his first interception of the season and took it all the way back for a 38-yard pick-six.
That win improved St. Thomas’s record to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in Pioneer Football League play, boosting morale and marking them as early contenders in the conference. Key players stepped up when it mattered — a satisfying performance in front of one of the biggest crowds of their home season.
What This Means for the Community
Players at SAHS are continuing a legacy of excellence. Recent seasons have seen team championships and individual honors across many sports — girls’ swimming and diving, softball, soccer, track and field, and nordic skiing among them. The depth of competition means much beyond wins: it’s molding leaders and bringing recognition to the school and region alike.
At the collegiate level, St. Thomas’s impressive D-I transition is becoming more than just a story to watch. Moments like the San Diego win are building proof that the program belongs — athletically, culturally, and as a beacon for local talent aspiring to play at the next level.
Looking Ahead

- Community support continues to matter — from packed stands at SAHS home fields to booster contributions, and from youth sports pipelines feeding into high school and college squads.
