Explore Stillwater: Parks & Activities That Bring the City Alive

Hey everyone, Mia Erickson here. If you’re looking for ideas for your next day off or weekend here in Stillwater, you’re in luck. There’s no shortage of parks, trails, historic spots, and fun treats around town to explore. These are some of my favorite go-tos that always feel fresh, no matter the time of year.

Parks, Paths & Riverfront Views

Historic Lift Bridge & St. Croix Crossing Loop

One of the most iconic Stillwater landmarks: the Lift Bridge (built in 1931). Now a pedestrian and bike bridge, it spans the St. Croix River and connects to the ~5-mile St. Croix Crossing Loop Trail. Whether you’re walking at sunrise or biking in the golden hour, the views upstream and into Wisconsin are hard to beat.

Lowell Park & Pioneer Park

Both parks offer lush riverfront walks, picnic spots, and views over the water and the historic downtown. Pioneer Park is perched on a bluff north of Main Street—great for sunset snapshots.

Brown’s Creek Trail

This trail meanders west of town and down toward downtown—great for a level walk, jog, or bike ride. If you’re after a peaceful stretch shaded by trees, this is it.

Art, History & Hidden Gems

Union Art Alley & Historic Stairs

Union Art Alley is a small but colorful nook just off Main Street—murals, street art, and local flair. Pair it with a tour of the historic stairs around town (some date back to the 1800s) for a walking route that’s part workout, part heritage.

Warden’s House Museum

Operated by the Washington County Historical Society, the Warden’s House is one of the oldest house-museums around—still preserved, full of stories about how this town grew up over the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Water + Outdoor Adventure

Stillwater River Boats & Gondola Romantica

Being on the St. Croix means river-time is a thing. Public or private paddle-wheel boat rides, and even romantic gondola trips, are wonderful ways to experience the river. Especially peaceful early or late in the day.

Pine Point Regional Park & Square Lake Park

If you want more woods, water, or camping, head out to Pine Point or Square Lake. Beaches, boat launches, and cross-country ski trails keep these spots busy in every season.

Kid-Friendly & Sweet Stops

Teddy Bear Park

One of my favorite spots when the family’s along. Slides, themed storybook features, a train—without being overwhelming. Open most of the warmer months, and totally free.

Treats Trail

Got a sweet tooth? Stillwater has you covered via the Treats Trail—local shops, frozen treats and delicious snacks scattered across town. A fun little mission when you want dessert first.

How to Plan Your Day

  • Mix & match: pair an outdoor activity like trail or river with arts or historic spots downtown.
  • Check open hours for parks or boat rides—some spots are seasonal.
  • Arrive early at popular places like Lowell Park or river tours to avoid the crowds.
  • For dining, Main Street has tons of great cafes and restaurants to wind down after exploring.

Stillwater doesn’t have to be fancy to be unforgettable. Sometimes the best days are walks, river views, and dessert at the end. If you want suggestions for specific occasions—say, kid-friendly rainy day or date-night you’ll never forget—just say the word.
