In recent years, Stillwater has made significant strides toward sustainability, reflecting a community-wide commitment to environmental stewardship. This article highlights key initiatives and programs that are shaping our city’s greener future.
Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School
Behind Stillwater Area High School lies the Environmental Learning Center (ELC), a 55-acre expanse encompassing oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. This diverse landscape serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding and wildlife monitoring. The ELC is open to the public for hiking, though visitors are reminded that dogs are not permitted to preserve the area’s ecological integrity.
Sustainable Stillwater MN: A Community-Driven Effort
Since its inception in 2013, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) has been at the forefront of promoting sustainability in our community. Achieving nonprofit status in 2019, SSMN has spearheaded initiatives such as the Green Business Directory and the Safe Routes to School program. Their efforts have been instrumental in Stillwater’s recognition as a Minnesota GreenStep City, underscoring our collective dedication to sustainable practices.
Natural Resources and Seasonal Best Practices
SSMN emphasizes the importance of managing our natural resources responsibly. They advocate for seasonal best practices, including:
- Winter: Minimizing salt use for deicing and recovering sand for reuse.
- Spring: Clearing road gutters to prevent debris from entering storm drains and adopting nearby storm drains.
- Summer: Maintaining rain gardens and limiting lawn watering.
- Autumn: Planning and implementing buckthorn removal and assessing annual accomplishments.
These practices aim to preserve the quality and diversity of our local environment.
Energy Action Plan: A Collaborative Approach
In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program, leading to the development of an Energy Action Plan. This plan provides a roadmap for residents and businesses to save energy, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions. Community members are encouraged to participate in local events and initiatives focused on energy education and climate solutions.
Addressing PFAS in Drinking Water
The City of Stillwater is proactive in monitoring and addressing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in our drinking water. With eight wells drawing from the Prairie Du Chien-Jordan and Jordan aquifers, the city ensures water quality through regular testing and treatment, adhering to Minnesota Department of Health standards.
Climate Change Impacts and Community Resilience
Minnesota is experiencing the effects of climate change, including increased temperatures and more frequent intense storms. These changes impact our natural environment and quality of life. Stillwater’s participation in the GreenStep Cities program and the development of a Climate Action Plan demonstrate our commitment to building a resilient community prepared to face these challenges.
Through these initiatives, Stillwater exemplifies how a community can come together to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship, ensuring a healthier future for all residents.
