Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively pursuing sustainability through various community-driven environmental initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for residents while preserving the natural beauty of the area.

Environmental Learning Center

Located behind Stillwater Area High School, the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) spans 55 acres and features diverse biomes, including oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. The ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding and wildlife monitoring. Public hiking is encouraged, though dogs are not permitted to maintain the area’s ecological integrity.

Sustainable Stillwater MN

Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental resilience. SSMN has spearheaded initiatives such as the Green Business Directory, which recognizes local businesses committed to sustainability, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities program, guiding municipalities toward best practices in sustainability.

GreenStep Cities Program

Since 2018, Stillwater has been designated a Minnesota GreenStep City, thanks to the collaborative efforts of SSMN and city officials. The GreenStep program provides a framework for cities to achieve sustainability through best practices in areas like energy efficiency, land use, and transportation. The GreenStep team continues to work closely with the city to implement these practices and develop a Climate Action Plan.

Energy Action Plan

In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program to develop an Energy Action Plan. This plan offers residents and businesses strategies to save energy, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions. Community members are encouraged to participate in local events and initiatives focused on energy education and climate solutions.

Natural Resources and Community Engagement

SSMN’s Natural Resources Working Group engages volunteers in projects that protect and manage local plant, animal, and water resources. Seasonal activities include clearing road gutters in spring to prevent debris from entering storm drains, maintaining rain gardens in summer, and removing invasive species in autumn. These efforts contribute to the overall health and sustainability of Stillwater’s natural environment.

Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, fostering a community that values and actively participates in preserving its natural resources.
