Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various community-driven initiatives. These efforts aim to preserve the natural beauty of our region and promote a healthier environment for all residents.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area behind Stillwater Area High School, featuring diverse ecosystems such as oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. This space serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding, small mammal tracking, and wildlife photography, fostering a deep connection with nature.

Sustainable Stillwater MN: A Community Effort

Founded in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability across the community. SSMN has been instrumental in initiatives like the Green Business Directory and the Energy Action Plan, which focus on reducing energy consumption and promoting eco-friendly practices among local businesses and residents.

Bird City Program: Protecting Avian Habitats

In collaboration with the City of Stillwater, SSMN leads the Bird City Program, which aims to protect bird populations and their habitats. This program involves community education, habitat restoration, and efforts to reduce threats to birds, aligning with the Minnesota Audubon Society’s best practices.

Addressing PFAS in Drinking Water

The City of Stillwater is proactively addressing the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the local water supply. Plans are underway to construct a treatment facility at Well #10, with completion expected by May 2026. This facility will ensure that the community continues to have access to safe and clean drinking water.

Naturalist-in-Residence Programs

The Stillwater Public Library offers Naturalist-in-Residence programs led by experts like Andy Weaver. These programs provide residents with opportunities to explore the local ecosystem, including stream biology, prairie ecology, and bird watching, enhancing community engagement with the environment.

Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, ensuring that our community remains vibrant and healthy for future generations.
