Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various community-driven initiatives. These efforts aim to preserve the natural beauty of our area and promote a healthier environment for all residents.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre parcel behind Stillwater Area High School, managed to reflect Minnesota’s major biomes: oak forest, prairie, and coniferous planting. The ELC provides students with hands-on learning experiences, including banding migratory birds, trapping and marking small mammals, and using camera traps to capture wildlife photos. This immersive approach fosters a deep connection between students and the local environment.

Sustainable Stillwater MN’s Natural Resources Program

Sustainable Stillwater MN is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability across the community. Their Natural Resources program focuses on understanding and maintaining the quality and diversity of local plant, animal, and water resources. Volunteers engage in seasonal projects, collaborating with professionals and local councils to implement best practices. For instance, in spring, residents are encouraged to clear road gutters of debris to prevent pollutants from entering water systems.

Bird City Program

In collaboration with the City of Stillwater, Sustainable Stillwater MN has implemented the Bird City Program to protect birds and their habitats. This initiative involves education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration, aligning with best practices established by the Minnesota Audubon Society. Efforts include restoring and enhancing habitats and reducing human-caused threats to birds, reflecting the understanding that healthy bird populations indicate a healthy environment for people as well.

Energy Action Plan

Stillwater’s Energy Action Plan aims to educate and inspire residents and businesses to engage in energy-saving actions. The plan sets a community-wide goal to save 3.8 million kWh of electricity and 198,000 therms of natural gas by the end of 2025. Achieving this goal will avoid an additional 58% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions and save the community $450,000. Strategies include promoting energy efficiency and embracing renewable energy sources.

Addressing PFAS Contamination

The City of Stillwater is proactively addressing the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in its drinking water. Construction is underway for a new PFAS treatment facility at Well #10, with completion expected by May 2026. This facility will ensure the safety and quality of the city’s drinking water, demonstrating the city’s commitment to public health and environmental stewardship.

These initiatives highlight Stillwater’s dedication to environmental sustainability and community well-being. By participating in and supporting these programs, residents can contribute to preserving the natural beauty and health of our community for future generations.
