Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaging in various environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and protect natural resources. These efforts encompass community programs, educational opportunities, and infrastructure projects aimed at fostering a greener future.

Community-Led Sustainability Efforts

Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the city’s resilience and environmental stewardship. Established in 2016, SSMN has been instrumental in initiatives such as achieving Minnesota GreenStep City recognition and developing the Energy Action Plan adopted in 2024. Their work focuses on protecting natural resources, supporting local businesses in sustainable practices, and strengthening community connections.

Bird Conservation and Habitat Restoration

Under the Bird City Program, SSMN collaborates with the City of Stillwater to protect bird populations and their habitats. This program emphasizes education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration, aligning with best practices from the Minnesota Audubon Society. Efforts include engaging residents in bird conservation activities and integrating bird-friendly practices into community planning.

Environmental Education and Learning

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at Stillwater Area High School offers students hands-on experiences in diverse ecosystems. Spanning 55 acres, the ELC features oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings, along with seasonal ponds. Students participate in activities like bird banding, small mammal tracking, and wildlife photography, fostering a deep connection with the environment.

Energy Action Plan

Stillwater’s Energy Action Plan aims to educate and inspire residents and businesses to engage in energy-saving practices. The plan sets a community-wide goal to save 3.8 million kWh of electricity and 198,000 therms of natural gas by the end of 2025, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving the community approximately $450,000.

Addressing PFAS in Drinking Water

The City of Stillwater is proactively addressing the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. Construction is underway for a new PFAS treatment facility at Well #10, with completion expected by May 2026. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality drinking water for all residents.

Through these comprehensive efforts, Stillwater continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being.
