Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaging in various environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and resilience within the community. These efforts encompass a range of programs and partnerships aimed at preserving natural resources and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area behind Stillwater Area High School, featuring diverse biomes such as oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. This space serves as an outdoor classroom where students participate in activities like bird banding and wildlife monitoring. The ELC is also open to the public for hiking, though dogs are not permitted to maintain the area’s ecological integrity.

Sustainable Stillwater MN

Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental resilience in the community. Since its inception in 2013, SSMN has launched initiatives like the downtown business waste management program S.E.E.D., energy management for carbon reduction, and the Safe Routes to School program. In 2018, Stillwater was designated a Minnesota GreenStep City, thanks in part to SSMN’s efforts.

Energy Action Plan

In collaboration with Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy program, Stillwater developed an Energy Action Plan to help residents and businesses reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints. The plan focuses on saving energy, reducing emissions, and increasing energy resilience while preserving the city’s historic character.

Water Quality and PFAS Monitoring

The City of Stillwater is committed to ensuring safe drinking water for its residents. The city’s water utility serves approximately 20,600 people, drawing from groundwater sources. Regular testing and monitoring are conducted to detect contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), with mitigation measures implemented as needed to maintain water quality.

Community Engagement and Education

Events like the annual Valley Eco Fair, hosted by SSMN, bring together community members, businesses, and local leaders to learn about and engage in sustainability practices. These events offer educational opportunities and foster a sense of community around environmental stewardship.

Through these initiatives and ongoing community involvement, Stillwater continues to make significant strides toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
