Delano, Minnesota, is marking a significant milestone: its 150th anniversary. This sesquicentennial celebration offers residents and visitors a unique opportunity to reflect on the city’s rich history and participate in events that showcase the community’s enduring spirit.
Community Mural Project
One of the standout initiatives is the Community Mural Paint Project. Spearheaded by local artist LeAnna Wurzer, this project invites individuals of all ages to contribute to a large-scale mosaic mural. Participants paint 3″x3″ canvases featuring designs curated by Wurzer. These individual pieces will be assembled into a one-of-a-kind mural, set to be unveiled at the Annual Community Art Show in October 2026 and permanently displayed in the Delano Public Library. Painting sessions are scheduled throughout the year, with the next session in June. No registration is required, making it easy for everyone to be part of this artistic endeavor.
Delano’s Historic Fourth of July Celebration
Delano is renowned for hosting Minnesota’s oldest and largest Fourth of July celebration, a tradition dating back to 1857. This annual event attracts over 30,000 visitors and features a parade, fireworks, live music, and various family-friendly activities. The 2026 celebration promises to be even more special, commemorating both the nation’s independence and Delano’s 150th anniversary.
Delano’s Rich History
Founded in 1868 and incorporated in 1876, Delano has a storied past. Named after Francis Roach Delano, a railroad official, the city has grown from its early days as a railroad town to a vibrant community. Notable historical sites include the 1880s Eagle Newspaper Office, the 1888 Delano Village Hall, and the 1893 Simon Weldele House, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Engaging the Community
The sesquicentennial celebrations are not just about looking back but also about engaging the community in meaningful ways. Events like the Community Mural Paint Project and the Fourth of July festivities provide platforms for residents to come together, celebrate their shared heritage, and contribute to the city’s future.
As Delano commemorates this significant milestone, the community’s involvement ensures that the city’s history is honored and its future remains bright. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a visitor, participating in these events offers a chance to be part of Delano’s ongoing story.
