Stillwater, Minnesota, is witnessing a surge in community-led initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and resilience. These efforts encompass water quality improvements, habitat restoration, and climate action planning.
Addressing PFAS Contamination
The city has proactively tackled per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in its water supply. In 2025, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) initiated investigations to identify PFAS sources, including sampling private wells. Concurrently, Stillwater commenced construction of a PFAS treatment facility at Well #10, expected to be operational by May 2026. These measures underscore the city’s commitment to providing safe drinking water and protecting public health.
Bird City Program
Stillwater’s Bird City Program reflects its dedication to avian conservation and habitat preservation. Aligned with Minnesota Audubon Society guidelines, the program engages residents in bird conservation, habitat restoration, and reducing threats to birds. This initiative not only supports bird populations but also enhances biodiversity and environmental quality in the community.
Land Stewardship and Natural Resource Conservation
The Land Stewardship Program focuses on protecting land and water resources through community-led stewardship and practical conservation solutions. Emphasizing stormwater management and watershed health, the program addresses pollution and runoff before they reach local waterways, helping to protect the St. Croix River and surrounding ecosystems. By combining volunteer engagement with nature-based solutions, the program strengthens local understanding of how land use, water quality, and climate resilience are deeply interconnected.
GreenStep Cities Program
Since 2018, Stillwater has participated in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, which provides a framework for cities to achieve sustainability and resilience. The GreenStep team collaborates with city officials to implement best practices in areas such as green building, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation. Current priorities include developing a Climate Action Plan to address climate change impacts and enhance community resilience.
These collective efforts demonstrate Stillwater’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship, fostering a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
