Stillwater, Minnesota, is witnessing a surge in community-led initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and resilience. These efforts address various aspects of the local ecosystem, from water quality to wildlife conservation.
Land Stewardship and Water Quality
The Land Stewardship Program focuses on protecting land and water resources through community-led stewardship and practical conservation solutions. Emphasizing stormwater management and watershed health, the program addresses pollution and runoff before they reach local waterways, helping to protect the St. Croix River and surrounding ecosystems. This initiative empowers residents to take an active role in caring for their environment through hands-on action, education, and shared responsibility. By combining volunteer engagement with nature-based solutions, the Land Stewardship Program strengthens local understanding of how land use, water quality, and climate resilience are deeply interconnected. Through ongoing stewardship and emerging conservation efforts, the program supports healthier soils, cleaner water, and more resilient landscapes. These actions not only protect natural resources but also foster a strong culture of environmental care that benefits the entire community now and into the future.
Bird City Program
The Bird City Program advances Stillwater’s commitment to protecting birds and the ecosystems they depend on through education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration. Guided by best practices established by the Minnesota Audubon Society, the program focuses on engaging residents in bird conservation, restoring and enhancing habitat, and reducing human-caused threats to birds. These efforts reflect the understanding that healthy bird populations are a strong indicator of a healthy environment for people as well. Sustainable Stillwater MN works closely with the City of Stillwater to implement Bird City requirements and integrate bird-friendly practices into broader community planning. Because Stillwater is also a Minnesota GreenStep City, many Bird City actions naturally align with GreenStep sustainability goals, strengthening climate resilience, biodiversity, and environmental quality at the same time.
GreenStep Cities Program
Since 2018, Stillwater has been designated a Minnesota GreenStep City, thanks in part to the efforts of the Sustainable Stillwater GreenStep team. The GreenStep program has guidelines to help cities achieve sustainability, resiliency, and a better quality of life for its citizens. The GreenStep Group is made up of citizen advocates who work with city officials to coordinate local programs and practices under the 2040 Comprehensive Plan. They pay particular attention to the Plan’s sustainable best practices that address green building, energy efficiency, natural resource conservation, transportation, and much more. The team has been working closely with the City of Stillwater on the first steps for our community to have a Climate Action Plan. The biggest way for all to help is to actively communicate to the city council our dire need for a plan.
These community-driven initiatives exemplify Stillwater’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship, fostering a sustainable and resilient future for all residents.
