Hey Stillwater friends! If you’re looking to plan a relaxing weekend or discover some hidden gems right here at home, I’ve rounded up favorite parks, trails and attractions around town that always deliver. Whether you’re craving river views, trail hikes, or charming downtown spots, there’s something for everyone.
Parks & Nature Escapes
Pine Point Regional Park—This is a local go-to when you want to escape into nature without going far. With five miles of multi-use trails through forest, marshes and lakes, it’s perfect for biking, hiking, bird watching—and in winter, cross-country skiing. It also connects into the Gateway State Trail for longer rides.
Teddy Bear Park—Small but sweet. A shaded playground, green open space and shelter make it ideal for families or a quick break. Restrooms are right there.
Lowell Park—The stretch along the St. Croix River with a gazebo and scenic view of the Lift Bridge. I love it here around sunset. Great spot to picnic or just enjoy that river breeze.
Lily Lake Park—If you want more variety, Lily Lake delivers. Boat docks, fishing pier, swimming, tennis courts… you name it. Also ideal for family days or a stroll.
Trails, Views & Outdoor Movement
Brown’s Creek State Trail—This trail portion (about six miles) is mostly flat and paved. It links the Gateway Trail over to the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Whether you’re walking, riding, or just window shopping along Main Street afterwards, this trail blends nature and town beautifully.
Stillwater Lift Bridge & St. Croix Crossing Loop—Once this was a key shipping lift bridge; now it’s a dedicated pedestrian and bike path for views over the river. The loop across the current bridge adds miles of scenery. A great active way to see Stillwater from above and across the water.
History, Downtown & Hidden Gems
Downtown Main Street—Antiques, boutiques, sweets and cafés. This is where visiting friends want to go first. Lake and Company, Art galleries, that vintage candy store—plenty to wander and explore.
Stillwater River Boats & Paddle Outfitters—Get on the water. A river cruise on a paddle-wheel boat feels so classic, or rent your own paddle-board or kayak to explore at your own pace.
Washington County Heritage Center—For a slower-paced afternoon, dig into local history, logging heritage, and early life in the river valley. It’s a quieter stop but adds depth to this place we call home.
Tips for Longer Weekends or Staycations
- Wind down with live music or outdoor theater at Lowell Park or the amphitheater near the river.
- Check the events calendar—festivals like Harvest Fest, Lumberjack Days, parades and light displays pop up all through the year.
- Layer your activities—combine a lakeside walk with shop browsing, or an early-morning trail ride followed by brunch downtown.
- Bring gear! Good shoes, bike helmet, picnic blanket—makes spontaneous plan changes feel easy and fun.
Stillwater keeps its charm by mixing river life, nature and history. You don’t need a far drive to unplug or feel inspired—just pick a trail, pack a snack, and go.
