Hey Stillwater neighbors! Looking for plans to get out this weekend—or anytime really? I’ve put together a list of some great outdoor spots, peaceful trails, river views and local gems you might’ve passed by but haven’t fully explored yet.
Parks & Riverfront Delights
Lowell Park
Tucked along the St. Croix River downtown, Lowell Park is ideal for a picnic, a stroll, or to watch barges and paddle boats drift by. You can also catch beautiful views of the historic Lift Bridge from the grassy lawns.
Teddy Bear Park
A kid-friendly classic! This seasonal urban playground is packed with whimsical large sculptures: teddy bears, tree houses, train elements and more. Great if you’ve got little ones—or just love quirky art in public spaces.
Washington Square Park
A neighborhood favorite with a playground, small ball field, and shelter—perfect for a casual get-together or a relaxed afternoon outdoors without going all the way downtown.
Trails, Forests & Regional Parks
Pine Point Regional Park
Located north of Stillwater, Pine Point boasts 5 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and birdwatching—and in winter, cross-country skiing. It’s also one end of the Gateway State Trail so you can make a full or partial day of exploring. Permit required for vehicles.
Brown’s Creek State Trail & Nature Preserve
This mostly-flat trail follows an old railroad grade, making it accessible and scenic. The nature preserve offers more rustic paths. In winter, groomed trails here are great for skiing—just be mindful if hiking when trails are groomed.
St. Croix Crossing and St. Croix Boom Site Trail Loop
If you want something with a bit more elevation and rewarding views, this loop trail connects river overlooks, wooded hillsides, and artful bridges. It’s one of the highest-rated hiking loops in the area for good reason.
Games, Arts & Hidden Features
Pickleball, Tennis & Courts Around Town
Stillwater and Oak Park Heights have several places to get your game on. Try the courts at Staples Park, Northland Park, or Lily Lake Park for pickleball, or visit Liberty Village Tennis Courts. Whether you’re just learning or playing competitively, there’s something for you.
ArtReach St. Croix & Union Art Alley
For a break from nature, head to ArtReach near the library or wander through Union Art Alley downtown. Vibrant murals, rotating exhibits, and local artists everywhere—super accessible and no ticket needed.
Local Tips & Ideas
- Bring a refillable water bottle—many parks have limited drinking stations.
- Check weather before heading to prairie or riverside trails—they can get muddy or slick.
- In winter, many trails convert into ski or snowshoe paths—dress in layers and bring traction if needed.
- If you’re coming with a group, call ahead about shelters or picnic shelters at places like Pioneer Park or the regional parks.
No matter what time of year, Stillwater offers plenty to do outdoors—or just somewhere nice to sit and soak it all in. Let me know if you want hidden waterfalls, evening spots, or locally loved cafes next time!
