Stillwater has welcomed Jason Zimmerman as its new Community Development Director, bringing a fresh perspective to the city’s growth and development initiatives. Zimmerman, who grew up on the west side of the Twin Cities, is eager to contribute to Stillwater’s future while embracing its rich history.
“I work with a very enthusiastic and team-oriented group of people in City Hall,” Zimmerman said. “It’s been easy to step in and build on their positive thinking for the future of Stillwater.”
One of Zimmerman’s primary responsibilities is overseeing the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide the city’s development efforts for the next two decades. This plan aims to balance growth with preservation, ensuring that Stillwater maintains its unique character while accommodating new opportunities.
In addition to long-term planning, Zimmerman is focusing on several key projects:
Enhancing West Side Development
By supporting new development along Manning Avenue, the city aims to provide residents with convenient access to goods and services outside the downtown area. This initiative seeks to create a more balanced distribution of amenities throughout Stillwater.
Riverfront Improvements
The St. Croix Riverfront is one of Stillwater’s most cherished assets. Upcoming projects include:
- Lumberjack Landing: A 15-acre park featuring pedestrian access points along the Riverwalk. Developed in partnership with the National Park Service, the park will serve as both a recreational and educational space.
- Park Enhancements: With over 30 parks and open spaces, Stillwater recently received a $6 million grant from the Minnesota Legislature for park improvements. Residents also voted on a sales tax increase to fund comprehensive riverfront enhancements.
These initiatives reflect Stillwater’s commitment to thoughtful growth and community engagement. As Zimmerman and his team continue to implement these plans, residents can look forward to a future that honors the city’s heritage while embracing new opportunities.
