Stillwater’s Proactive Measures Ensure Safe Drinking Water Amid PFAS Concerns

In response to concerns over per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination, the City of Stillwater has initiated comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of its drinking water. PFAS, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment, have been detected in certain local wells, prompting swift action from city officials.

Temporary Treatment Facility at Well #10

To address the contamination, Stillwater is constructing a temporary treatment facility at Well #10, one of the wells found to have PFAS levels exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) drinking water standards. This facility aims to remove PFAS contaminants, allowing the well to be safely reactivated and meet the community’s water demands. Engineering design for the facility was completed by the end of March, with construction planned to start in late summer or early fall. The system is anticipated to be operational in spring 2026, coinciding with increased water usage during that period.

Comprehensive PFAS Investigation

Beyond the immediate treatment solution, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is conducting an extensive investigation to identify potential PFAS sources in Stillwater. This includes sampling private wells to assess contamination levels. The investigation, which began in May 2025, involves water and soil sampling throughout the city. Private well owners have been contacted for sampling, and those with PFAS levels above drinking water standards are eligible for treatment provided by the MPCA. This effort aims to determine the contamination source and implement long-term solutions to prevent future issues.

Ensuring Public Health and Safety

City officials emphasize their commitment to public health and safety. By proactively addressing PFAS contamination through immediate treatment solutions and comprehensive investigations, Stillwater aims to provide residents with safe and clean drinking water. The city continues to collaborate with state agencies and experts to monitor water quality and implement necessary measures to protect the community.

Residents with questions or concerns about their water quality are encouraged to contact the City of Stillwater’s Public Works Department or visit the city’s official website for more information.
