Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaging in environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and protect natural resources. These efforts encompass various programs and community-driven projects aimed at fostering a greener future.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre parcel behind Stillwater Area High School that reflects three major biomes found in Minnesota: oak forest, prairie, and coniferous planting. The ELC includes several ponds and learning circles with benches for various educational activities. Students engage in field biology courses, band migratory birds, trap and mark small mammals, attach radio collars to wildlife, and use camera traps to capture photos of wildlife.

Sustainable Stillwater MN

Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a grassroots initiative dedicated to promoting sustainability across the community. The organization focuses on three key pillars:

  • Environment: Protecting and restoring the natural world.
  • Economy: Supporting local businesses that operate responsibly.
  • Community: Building connections and shared purpose among residents.

SSMN has been instrumental in achieving Minnesota GreenStep City recognition for Stillwater and has collaborated with the city on the Energy Action Plan adopted in 2024.

Bird City Program

The Bird City Program advances Stillwater’s commitment to protecting birds and their ecosystems through education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration. Guided by best practices from the Minnesota Audubon Society, the program engages residents in bird conservation, restores habitats, and reduces human-caused threats to birds. These efforts align with the city’s sustainability goals, enhancing climate resilience and biodiversity.

Naturalist-in-Residence Programs

The Stillwater Public Library offers Naturalist-in-Residence programs led by experts like Andy Weaver, a former biology and environmental science teacher. These programs invite children (ages 8+) and their families to explore the rich ecosystem of the St. Croix River Valley, covering topics such as stream biology, prairie ecology, Minnesota birds, beekeeping, and the story of Minnesota raptors and the peregrine falcon.

Addressing PFAS Contamination

The City of Stillwater is proactively addressing PFAS contamination in its groundwater supply. Construction is underway for a new PFAS treatment facility at Well #10, with completion expected by May 2026. This facility aims to ensure safe drinking water for residents by removing PFAS compounds from the water supply.

Energy Action Plan

Stillwater’s Energy Action Plan educates and inspires residents and businesses to engage in energy-saving actions. The plan aims to save 3.8 million kWh of electricity and 198,000 therms of natural gas by the end of 2025, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving the community $450,000. Strategies include promoting energy efficiency and embracing renewable energy sources.

Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, ensuring a healthier and more resilient community for future generations.
