Community Initiatives Enhance Stillwater’s Environmental Resilience

Community Initiatives Enhance Stillwater’s Environmental Resilience

Stillwater, Minnesota, is witnessing a surge in community-led initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and resilience. These efforts encompass water quality improvements, habitat restoration, and climate action planning.

Addressing PFAS Contamination

The city has proactively tackled per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in its water supply. Construction is underway for a new PFAS treatment facility at Well #10, with completion expected by May 2026. This facility will employ granular activated carbon technology to effectively remove PFAS, ensuring safe drinking water for residents. Additionally, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is investigating potential PFAS sources, including sampling private wells, to identify and mitigate contamination risks.

Bird City Program

In collaboration with Sustainable Stillwater MN, the city has launched the Bird City Program to protect avian species and their habitats. This initiative focuses on education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration, aligning with best practices from the Minnesota Audubon Society. Efforts include restoring and enhancing habitats, reducing human-caused threats to birds, and integrating bird-friendly practices into community planning.

Land Stewardship and Natural Resource Conservation

The Land Stewardship Program emphasizes protecting land and water resources through community-led conservation solutions. Key projects include the Litter Reduction Project, Rain Garden Maintenance Project, and Stormwater Management Project. These initiatives aim to improve water quality, manage stormwater effectively, and foster a culture of environmental care among residents.

GreenStep Cities Program

Since 2018, Stillwater has participated in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, which provides guidelines for achieving sustainability and resilience. The GreenStep team collaborates with city officials to implement best practices in areas such as green building, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation. Current priorities include developing a Climate Action Plan to address climate change impacts and enhance community resilience.

These collective efforts demonstrate Stillwater’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, fostering a healthier and more resilient community for current and future generations.
