Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various community-driven initiatives. These efforts aim to preserve the natural beauty of the area while promoting a healthier, more resilient community.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre parcel behind Stillwater Area High School, managed to reflect Minnesota’s major biomes: oak forest, prairie, and coniferous planting. The ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like banding migratory birds and studying local wildlife. Public hiking is encouraged, though dogs are not allowed in the ELC.

Sustainable Stillwater MN

Founded in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability across the community. SSMN has been instrumental in initiatives such as achieving Minnesota GreenStep City recognition, supporting Safe Routes to School, and launching the Green Business Directory. These programs focus on environmental stewardship, economic responsibility, and community engagement.

Bird City Program

In collaboration with the City of Stillwater, SSMN leads the Bird City Program, which focuses on protecting birds and their habitats through education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration. This program aligns with the Minnesota Audubon Society’s best practices and contributes to the city’s sustainability goals.

Energy Action Plan

Stillwater’s Energy Action Plan aims to educate and inspire residents and businesses to engage in energy-saving actions. The plan sets a community-wide goal to save 3.8 million kWh of electricity and 198,000 therms of natural gas by the end of 2025, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving the community approximately $450,000.

Addressing PFAS in Drinking Water

The City of Stillwater is proactively addressing the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in its drinking water. Construction is underway for a new PFAS treatment facility at Well #10, with completion expected by May 2026. This facility will ensure the provision of safe, high-quality drinking water for residents.

Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, fostering a community that values and actively participates in preserving its natural resources.
