Embracing Stillwater’s Rich Heritage: A Community Perspective

Stillwater, often referred to as the ‘Birthplace of Minnesota,’ holds a unique place in our state’s history. Established in 1843, it was among the first towns in the region, even preceding Minneapolis. The city’s early growth was fueled by the lumber industry, leveraging the abundant white pine forests and the St. Croix River for transportation.

In 1848, Stillwater hosted the territorial convention that initiated Minnesota’s journey to statehood. This pivotal event underscores our city’s central role in shaping the state’s identity. Additionally, the establishment of the Minnesota Territorial Prison in 1853 further highlights Stillwater’s significance during that era.

Today, remnants of our rich past are evident throughout the city. The historic lift bridge, constructed in 1931, stands as a testament to our engineering heritage. Many of our preserved buildings now house local businesses, blending history with modern commerce.

As residents, we have the privilege and responsibility to honor and preserve this heritage. Engaging with local historical societies, participating in community events, and supporting preservation initiatives are ways we can contribute. By doing so, we ensure that future generations can appreciate and learn from Stillwater’s storied past.
