High School Athletics
Stillwater Area High School, the oldest high school in Minnesota, has a storied history in athletics. Since 1913, the Ponies have secured 55 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) State Championships, reflecting a tradition of excellence across various sports. The school’s commitment to athletic development is evident in its state-of-the-art facilities, including the Spike Zone Pro turf field installed in 2016.

Community Sports Programs
Beyond high school athletics, Stillwater offers numerous community sports programs that encourage participation across all ages and skill levels. The St. Croix Valley Recreation Center serves as a hub for various activities, featuring a 363′ x 245′ dome field house and two NHL-style ice sheets. The center provides open skating sessions, group skating lessons, and hosts local hockey leagues, fostering a love for ice sports within the community.
For cycling enthusiasts, the Stillwater Mountain Bike Team offers a dynamic program for students in grades 6 through 12. Established in 2013 with just 26 athletes, the team has grown to over 90 members and has clinched seven state championships. The program emphasizes skill development, camaraderie, and lifelong fitness through the sport of mountain biking.
Additionally, Chilkoot Velo promotes group cycling and community engagement in the St. Croix Valley. Since 2009, this organization has united cyclists of all skill levels for group rides, social events, and competitive challenges, offering over 100 annual rides tailored to different paces and styles.
Inclusive Sports Initiatives
Stillwater is also home to programs that prioritize inclusivity in sports. Limitless Cycling is an adaptive outdoor program dedicated to enhancing the mental and physical well-being of individuals of all abilities. By providing piloted adaptive bicycle and Action Trackchair® rides, they empower community members to experience the outdoors in a supportive environment.
