Stillwater has been actively pursuing initiatives to enhance community development and address local concerns. A notable development is the appointment of Jason Zimmerman as the new Community Development Director. Zimmerman, who grew up on the west side of the Twin Cities, is enthusiastic about contributing to Stillwater’s future. He is currently working on the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide the city’s development efforts for the next two decades.
In addition to leadership changes, the city is addressing environmental concerns related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the local water supply. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is conducting investigations to identify potential PFAS sources in Stillwater. This includes sampling private wells and analyzing water and soil throughout the city. The goal is to determine the source of PFAS contamination and ensure the safety of the community’s drinking water.
Furthermore, the city is considering adjustments to its event schedule in response to residents’ concerns about the frequency of festivals and their impact on the historic downtown area. Discussions are underway to find a balance that maintains the city’s vibrant cultural scene while addressing community feedback.
These initiatives reflect Stillwater’s commitment to thoughtful growth and responsiveness to residents’ needs, aiming to preserve the city’s historic charm while ensuring a sustainable and vibrant future.
