The Stillwater City Council is exploring the creation of a Social District in the downtown area, a move that would permit the public consumption of alcoholic beverages within specified boundaries. This initiative follows the Minnesota Legislature’s approval of Social Districts in cities like Anoka in 2022 and Shakopee in 2024.
Under the proposed plan, licensed establishments would sell alcoholic drinks in official Social District cups, which patrons could then consume on sidewalks, parks, and participating retail locations within the district. Clear signage would delineate the district’s boundaries, ensuring that beverages remain within the designated area. The city would also establish specific days and hours of operation for the district.
To gauge public opinion and gather feedback, the city has scheduled an open house during the week of July 14. Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives. The feedback collected will be presented to the City Council at their meeting on August 5. Depending on the community’s response and the council’s decision, a pilot program could launch in the fall, with a full season potentially beginning in the spring of the following year.
