Stillwater, Minnesota, is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant community. As environmental concerns grow globally, our town has taken proactive steps to ensure the preservation of our natural surroundings and promote sustainable practices.
Environmental Learning Center: A Hub for Education
Located behind Stillwater Area High School, the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) spans 55 acres and showcases Minnesota’s diverse biomes, including oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. The ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding and wildlife monitoring. While public hiking is encouraged, visitors are reminded that dogs are not permitted to maintain the area’s ecological balance.
Sustainable Stillwater MN: Grassroots Initiatives
Since its inception in 2013, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) has been at the forefront of promoting environmental resilience. Achieving nonprofit status in 2019, SSMN has spearheaded projects such as the Green Business Directory and the Safe Routes to School program. Their efforts have been instrumental in Stillwater’s recognition as a Minnesota GreenStep City, reflecting our commitment to sustainable urban development.
GreenStep Cities Program: A Commitment to Sustainability
Stillwater’s participation in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program underscores our dedication to sustainable practices. This voluntary initiative provides a framework for cities to achieve sustainability goals through best practices in areas like energy efficiency, land use, and transportation. Our community’s involvement highlights a collective effort to enhance quality of life while preserving natural resources.
Water Quality and Safety: Addressing PFAS
Ensuring the safety of our drinking water is paramount. The City of Stillwater sources water from the Prairie Du Chien-Jordan and Jordan aquifers, treating it in accordance with Minnesota Department of Health standards. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about water quality and any measures taken to address potential contaminants.
Community Engagement: We Are Water MN Exhibit
In collaboration with ArtReach St. Croix and the Stillwater Public Library, the ‘We Are Water MN’ exhibit offers residents an interactive experience to understand the significance of water in our community. Through personal stories and scientific insights, the exhibit fosters a deeper appreciation for our water resources and the importance of their conservation.
As residents of Stillwater, our collective efforts in environmental stewardship not only preserve the natural beauty of our town but also ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Engaging in these initiatives reflects our shared commitment to a healthier, more resilient community.
