Community Initiatives Strengthen Stillwater’s Environmental Resilience

Community Initiatives Strengthen Stillwater’s Environmental Resilience

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaging in environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and resilience. These efforts encompass various aspects of community life, from water quality management to energy conservation and natural resource preservation.

Addressing Water Quality Concerns

The city has been proactive in investigating and mitigating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in drinking water. In 2022 and 2023, Stillwater identified unsafe PFAS levels in certain wells and ceased their use. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is conducting ongoing investigations, including sampling private wells, to determine contamination sources and ensure safe drinking water for all residents. Homeowners with affected wells are eligible for treatment provided by the MPCA. Learn more about PFAS investigation efforts.

Advancing Energy Conservation

In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program, leading to the development of a comprehensive Energy Action Plan. This plan outlines strategies for residents and businesses to reduce energy consumption, lower costs, and decrease carbon emissions. Community members are encouraged to participate in local events and initiatives focused on energy education and climate solutions. Explore the Energy Action Plan.

Preserving Natural Resources

Sustainable Stillwater MN, a local nonprofit organization, collaborates with city officials and volunteers to protect and manage the community’s natural resources. Their initiatives include the Adopt-A-Raingarden program, which involves volunteers in maintaining rain gardens to manage stormwater effectively. Additionally, the organization promotes seasonal best practices, such as minimizing salt use in winter and planting native species in spring, to enhance environmental stewardship.
