Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various community-driven initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance the city’s ecological health and promote sustainable practices among residents and businesses.

Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area behind Stillwater Area High School, featuring diverse biomes such as oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. It serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding and wildlife monitoring. The ELC is open to the public for hiking, though dogs are not permitted to maintain the area’s ecological integrity.

Sustainable Stillwater MN

Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability within the community. SSMN has been instrumental in initiatives like the Green Business Directory, which recognizes local businesses committed to environmental responsibility, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities program, guiding the city toward sustainable practices.

Natural Resources and Seasonal Practices

SSMN emphasizes the importance of managing natural resources responsibly. They advocate for seasonal best practices, such as minimizing salt use in winter, clearing road gutters in spring, maintaining rain gardens in summer, and removing invasive species in autumn. These actions help preserve the local environment and promote biodiversity.

Energy Action Plan

In collaboration with Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy program, Stillwater developed an Energy Action Plan to assist residents and businesses in reducing energy consumption and carbon footprints. The plan focuses on education and actionable steps to enhance energy efficiency throughout the community.

Community Engagement and Education

Educational programs, like the Naturalist-in-Residence at the Stillwater Public Library, offer residents opportunities to learn about local ecology and environmental stewardship. These programs foster a deeper connection between the community and its natural surroundings.

Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, encouraging residents to participate actively in preserving and enhancing the local environment.
