Sustaining Stillwater: Community Initiatives for a Greener Future

In the heart of the St. Croix Valley, Stillwater is embracing a future where environmental sustainability is at the forefront. Through collaborative efforts between local organizations, schools, and residents, the community is implementing initiatives aimed at preserving natural resources and mitigating climate change impacts.

Environmental Learning Center: Educating the Next Generation

Behind Stillwater Area High School lies the Environmental Learning Center (ELC), a 55-acre expanse reflecting Minnesota’s diverse biomes, including oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. This outdoor classroom offers students hands-on experiences in field biology, such as bird banding and wildlife monitoring. The ELC is also open to the public for hiking, fostering a community connection to nature. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the trails, though dogs are not permitted to maintain the area’s ecological integrity.

Sustainable Stillwater MN: Grassroots Environmental Advocacy

Since its inception in 2013, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) has been a driving force in promoting sustainability within the community. Achieving nonprofit status in 2019, SSMN has spearheaded various initiatives, including the Green Business Directory, Safe Routes to School, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities plan. These programs aim to enhance environmental stewardship, support local businesses, and improve community health.

GreenStep Cities Program: A Commitment to Sustainable Practices

Stillwater’s participation in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program underscores its dedication to sustainable development. This voluntary program provides a framework for cities to achieve sustainability goals through best practices in areas such as energy efficiency, land use, and transportation. The GreenStep team collaborates with city officials to align local programs with the 2040 Comprehensive Plan, focusing on green building, natural resource conservation, and more.

Energy Action Plan: Reducing Carbon Footprints

In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program, leading to the development of an Energy Action Plan. This plan outlines strategies for residents and businesses to save energy, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions. By participating in energy programs and adopting energy-saving measures, the community aims to enhance energy resiliency while preserving Stillwater’s historic character for future generations.

Community Engagement: Events and Education

Community events like the annual Valley Eco Fair, hosted by SSMN, bring together residents, businesses, and local leaders to learn about and engage in sustainability efforts. These events offer educational opportunities, promote eco-friendly practices, and strengthen community bonds around environmental stewardship.

Through these collective efforts, Stillwater is not only addressing the challenges posed by climate change but also fostering a community culture that values and actively participates in environmental sustainability.
