Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively pursuing sustainability through various community-driven environmental initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for residents while preserving the natural beauty of the area.
Environmental Learning Center
The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at Stillwater Area High School offers students hands-on experiences in diverse ecosystems, including oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. The 55-acre site features learning circles and ponds, providing opportunities for activities such as bird banding and wildlife monitoring. Public hiking is encouraged, though dogs are not permitted in the ELC.
Sustainable Stillwater MN
Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental resiliency. SSMN has spearheaded initiatives like the Green Business Directory, Safe Routes to School, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities plan. The organization also hosts events such as the annual Valley Eco Fair, fostering community engagement in sustainability efforts.
GreenStep Cities Program
Since 2018, Stillwater has been recognized as a Minnesota GreenStep City, thanks to the collaborative efforts of SSMN and city officials. The GreenStep program provides a framework for cities to achieve sustainability through best practices in areas like green building, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation. The GreenStep team continues to work closely with the city to implement these practices under the 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
Energy Action Plan
In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program to develop and implement an Energy Action Plan. This plan offers residents and businesses strategies to save energy, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions. Community members are encouraged to participate in local events and initiatives focused on energy education and climate solutions.
Water Quality and Safety
The City of Stillwater is committed to ensuring safe drinking water for its residents. The city’s water utility serves approximately 20,600 people, drawing from the Prairie Du Chien-Jordan and Jordan aquifers. Regular testing and treatment processes are in place to maintain water quality and safety standards.
Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, fostering a healthier and more resilient community for current and future generations.
