Stillwater’s Social District Proposal: Community Weighs In

Stillwater is exploring the establishment of a social district in its downtown area, a move that would permit individuals to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages while walking within a defined zone. This initiative aims to enhance the vibrancy of downtown and support local businesses.

Authorized by the Minnesota Legislature in 2024, the city has been gathering community input on the proposal. In June and July 2025, residents were invited to share their thoughts through surveys and a public open house held at the Stillwater Library. The feedback collected will inform the city’s decision-making process regarding the implementation of the social district.

Proponents believe that a social district could attract more visitors and boost economic activity, while opponents express concerns about potential public safety issues and the impact on the community’s character. The city continues to evaluate these perspectives as it considers moving forward with the plan.
