Stillwater Considers Establishing Downtown Social District

Stillwater Considers Establishing Downtown Social District

Stillwater city officials are exploring the establishment of a social district in the downtown area, a move that would permit the public consumption of alcoholic beverages within designated boundaries. This initiative follows authorization granted by the Minnesota Legislature in 2024, enabling the city to create and operate such a district.

A social district is a specific area where individuals can purchase alcoholic drinks from licensed establishments and consume them while walking through the defined zone. The concept aims to enhance the vibrancy of downtown areas, support local businesses, and attract more visitors.

To gather community input, the city has launched a survey and scheduled a public open house. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts through the survey available on the city’s official website. Additionally, an open house will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Margaret Rivers Room at the Stillwater Library.

City staff will collect feedback during June and July to assess public opinion and address potential concerns. The information gathered will inform the city’s decision-making process regarding the implementation of the social district.

For more details and to participate in the survey, residents can visit the city’s official website.
