Stillwater, Minnesota, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various community-driven initiatives. These efforts aim to preserve natural resources, promote energy efficiency, and foster a healthier environment for all residents.
Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School
The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area behind Stillwater Area High School, featuring diverse biomes such as oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. It serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding and wildlife monitoring. The ELC is open to the public for hiking, though dogs are not permitted to maintain the area’s ecological integrity.
Sustainable Stillwater MN
Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability within the community. The group has been instrumental in initiatives like the GreenStep Cities program, which provides guidelines for cities to achieve sustainability and resilience. Their efforts encompass areas such as green building, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation.
Energy Action Plan
In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program to develop an Energy Action Plan. This plan offers residents and businesses strategies to save energy, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions. The goal is to educate and inspire the community to engage in energy-saving practices, thereby enhancing energy resilience while preserving the city’s historic character.
Water Quality and PFAS Monitoring
The City of Stillwater is proactive in monitoring and addressing water quality concerns, including the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The city’s water utility serves approximately 20,600 people, drawing from groundwater sources. Regular testing and adherence to health-based values ensure the safety of the drinking water, with ongoing efforts to mitigate any potential risks associated with PFAS.
Through these initiatives, Stillwater demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, aiming to create a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
