As Stillwater continues to experience growth, the City Council is actively addressing development projects and community concerns to ensure balanced progress.
Brixton Townhome Development
The proposed Brixton Townhome project, a 108-unit development at Manning Avenue and 80th Street North, has been a focal point of recent council discussions. In April, the council reached a 2-2 deadlock on approving the planned-unit development and preliminary plat, leading to a postponement of the decision. Residents have voiced concerns about potential traffic increases, school bus safety, and the absence of sidewalks in the area. The council and developers are working to address these issues by revising the design and incorporating additional buffering measures.
Community Development Leadership
In February, Jason Zimmerman was appointed as Stillwater’s new Community Development Director. Zimmerman is leading efforts to update the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide the city’s development over the next two decades. His focus includes continuing projects initiated by his predecessors and fostering meaningful growth that aligns with the community’s values.
Managing Community Events
Stillwater’s vibrant event calendar, featuring festivals like Lumberjack Days and Harvest Fest, has drawn significant crowds to the historic downtown. However, some residents have expressed concerns about the impact of frequent events on daily life. In response, the City Council is evaluating strategies to balance the benefits of tourism with the needs of local residents, considering potential limitations on the number and scale of events.
The City Council remains committed to addressing these challenges by engaging with residents and stakeholders to ensure that Stillwater’s growth is managed thoughtfully and sustainably.
