Stillwater, Minnesota, is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and rich natural resources. As our community continues to grow, so does the importance of preserving these environmental treasures. Local organizations and city initiatives are at the forefront of this mission, addressing both conservation efforts and the challenges posed by climate change.
Community-Led Conservation Efforts
Sustainable Stillwater MN has been instrumental in promoting environmental stewardship within our community. Established in 2013, this nonprofit organization has launched various sustainability initiatives, including the downtown business waste management program S.E.E.D., energy management for carbon reduction, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities plan. Their mission is to support initiatives that promote social, economic, and environmental resiliency in Stillwater.
One notable project is the Bird City Program, which advances Stillwater’s commitment to protecting birds and their habitats. Designated a Minnesota Bird City in 2021, the program focuses on education, habitat stewardship, and community collaboration. Residents are encouraged to participate in bird conservation efforts, such as the ‘Lights Out Migration Awareness’ campaign and native plantings to support bird habitats.
Addressing Environmental Challenges
Climate change poses significant challenges to our local environment. According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, our state is experiencing higher temperatures, more extreme storms with intense flooding, and changes in our unique ecosystems. These impacts affect the economy, natural environment, and quality of life in Minnesota.
In response, the City of Stillwater has established the Energy Action Commission. This committee is tasked with implementing objectives outlined in the Energy Action work plan, contributing to the city’s environmental and community goals. The commission collaborates with Partners in Energy to address climate change impacts and promote sustainability.
Protecting Water Resources
Water quality is a critical concern for Stillwater residents. The city’s drinking water comes from groundwater sources through eight wells. In recent years, the city has taken steps to address contaminants such as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in the water supply. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is actively investigating potential PFAS sources in Stillwater, including sampling private wells, to ensure the safety of our drinking water.
Get Involved
Residents can play a vital role in these conservation efforts. Volunteering with organizations like Sustainable Stillwater MN, participating in local clean-up events, and adopting sustainable practices at home contribute to the overall health of our environment. Together, we can ensure that Stillwater remains a vibrant and sustainable community for generations to come.
