Embracing Sustainability: Stillwater’s Environmental Initiatives

Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaging in various environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and enhance the quality of life for its residents. These efforts encompass community programs, educational opportunities, and city-led projects aimed at preserving natural resources and fostering a greener future.

Community-Led Sustainability Efforts

Sustainable Stillwater MN is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental resilience within the community. Established in 2016, the organization has spearheaded several initiatives, including the downtown business waste management program S.E.E.D., energy management for carbon reduction, and the Safe Routes to School program. In 2018, their efforts contributed to Stillwater’s designation as a Minnesota GreenStep City, recognizing the city’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Environmental Education and Engagement

The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at Stillwater Area High School offers students hands-on experiences in diverse ecosystems, including oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. The 55-acre ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities such as banding migratory birds and monitoring local wildlife, fostering a deep connection with the environment.

Additionally, the Stillwater Public Library hosts Naturalist-in-Residence programs, inviting families to explore the St. Croix River Valley’s rich ecosystem. These programs cover topics like stream biology, prairie ecology, and local bird species, providing valuable environmental education to the community.

City Initiatives for a Greener Future

In collaboration with Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy program, Stillwater developed an Energy Action Plan to help residents and businesses reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints. The plan focuses on saving energy, reducing emissions, and increasing energy resiliency while preserving the city’s historic character.

Furthermore, the city has implemented measures to ensure environmental health and safety. Regular testing for radon and lead in drinking water is conducted in schools, with mitigation efforts undertaken when necessary. The city also provides information on PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in drinking water, outlining health risks and steps taken to maintain water quality.
