Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively pursuing sustainability through various community-driven environmental initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for residents while preserving the natural beauty of the area.
Environmental Learning Center
Located behind Stillwater Area High School, the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) spans 55 acres and features diverse biomes, including oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. The ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students engage in activities like bird banding and wildlife monitoring. The public is encouraged to explore the area through designated hiking trails, though dogs are not permitted to maintain the integrity of the environment.
Sustainable Stillwater MN
Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental resilience. SSMN has been instrumental in initiatives such as the Green Business Directory, Safe Routes to School, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities plan. These programs focus on reducing carbon footprints, enhancing energy efficiency, and fostering sustainable community development.
GreenStep Cities Program
Since 2018, Stillwater has participated in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, which provides a framework for cities to achieve sustainability goals. The program encompasses best practices in areas like green building, transportation, and natural resource conservation. The GreenStep team collaborates with city officials to implement these practices, aiming to create a more sustainable and resilient community.
Energy Action Plan
In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program to develop an Energy Action Plan. This plan outlines strategies for residents and businesses to save energy, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions. Community members are encouraged to participate in energy-saving programs and initiatives to help achieve the city’s energy goals.
Naturalist-in-Residence Programs
The Stillwater Public Library offers Naturalist-in-Residence programs led by experts like Andy Weaver. These programs provide educational opportunities for children and families to explore local ecosystems, including stream biology, prairie ecology, and bird watching. Such initiatives foster a deeper connection between the community and the natural environment.
Through these collective efforts, Stillwater continues to make significant strides toward sustainability, ensuring a healthier environment for current and future generations.
